Excelda Cameraphone in Green
Early 1930's
Originally part of the Ian Calderbank Collection of Gramophones.
This Gramophone has been Sold, but the details might be of interest to fellow Collectors.
The Excelda portable resembled the folding pocket type camera and was sometimes called a Cameraphone. It was made by Thorens, the renowned Swiss Manufacturer of Gramophones and introduced into the UK in the early 1930's. It came in a choice of colours, all with metal crackle-finish.
Excelda No.17 Soundbox. The brake and speed control are controlled by a push down or up lever at the back of the Gramophone. 2.5" green felt turntable, the record is secured by knurled knob. Leather carrying handle, case has plate "British Patent No. 255001".
Dimensions:- 2" high, 11" deep, 4.75" wide.
Condition:- The Gramophone is complete and has hardly been used. Everything is in very good condition except for some marks on the metal case as shown above.
The motor will actually play a full 12" record on one winding without slowing down (Just!), for Gramophones this small, this is quite a remarkable achievement.
