HMV GRAMOPHONES 1921 to 1936

I am always being asked to identify, date and give details about HMV models. This book is one of the main sources of information.

The book is composed of pictures and descriptions of UK HMV models copied from HMV Sales brochures issued between 1921 & 1936.

Most HMV Gramophones sold during this period can be readily identified and dated.

The book contains details of original specifications. Hence it is possible to check if a Gramophone is totally original and not altered. For example, the Soundbox is the name of the part that holds the needle, these were largely interchangeable between Gramophones, if it has been changed this makes the Gramophone less Collectible.

When an HMV Gramophone was originally purchased the new owner was supplied with Operating and Servicing Instructions, these are often lost. A copy of the original Instructions for the HMV Model 102 Portable Gramophone can be found in this book. Since all Gramophones operate and are serviced in a similar manner these instructions apply to all windup Gramophones. In regard to Servicing, the book states which parts to Oil, but more importantly the parts NOT TO OIL (the automatic brake).

The original Gramophone Sale Price can usually be found. There is also a section on HMV Accessories plus helpful information on HMV machines and MUCH, MUCH More.

COLLECTING PHONOGRAPHS & GRAMOPHONES
(THE GRAMOPHONE COLLECTORS "BIBLE")

Written by Christopher Proudfoot one of the World's foremost authorities on HMV and other makes of Gramophone & Phonograph.
This book is highly regarded by members of the Gramophone fraternity as the definitive work of accurate information about the various makes and models (especially HMV) of Gramophone & Phonograph that were available here in the UK.

(QUESTION:- Is a Gramophone An Original or Reproduction?)

collecting phonographs and gramophones
Things to Consider about a Gramophone:-
1. Is the Gramophone original or reproduction? (Very important with the high number of Horn Gramophone fakes being sold as original). What does a Genuine HMV Soundbox really look like?
2. Has the Gramophone been modified? Are all the fittings correct for that model?. Some Gramophones are not what they seem. Parts of Gramophones sometimes get lost or damaged over the years. An important part is the Gramophones Soundbox, an inexperienced person might not notice that a 1925 Soundbox is fitted on a 1923 machine, this makes the Gramophone "incorrect" and reduces its value and Collectability. This book helps in establishing a "correct" Gramophone.
3. Guidelines for Dating machine.
4. Information on Gramophone Manufacturers and Suppliers.
5. Repairs & Restoration.
6. Sources of other information relating to Gramophones & Phonographs.

This 10" by 8" book with its 120 pages jammed full of facts and clear accurate colour pictures of Gramophones and Phonographs goes a very long way in attempting to answer these critical points.

It took me two years of searching to find my first copy. Published in 1980, and being primarily a very readable reference book, not many copies were printed. It has not been reprinted due in part to the original printing plates being lost in a fire.

LOOK FOR THE DOG
(The Definitive Guide to Victor (Victrola) Gramophones)
by ROBERT BAUMBACH

gramophones - Look for the Dog

At the turn of the twentieth Century the Gramophone Company of America divided into two parts. The American Company was known as Victor and the UK Company subsequently became known as HMV. There was a common bond between the two separate companies, some HMV gramophone models were often similar in appearance to that of Victor, many of the components like Motors and Soundboxes (Reproducers) were the same except in identification.
This book is clearly written and contains full details of Victor / Victrola Gramophones :- Pictures, detailed description of each model, options available with each model, production quantities, dates of production, original costs etc etc. Servicing and adjustment instructions together with details of the Victor company are also including among other topics in this book.

Printed in 1994, this book is in good condition, 326 pages approximately 8.5" by 5.5", printed in Black & White.
