VERY LARGE HMV ILLUMINATED EXTERIOR SIGN
Designed to advertise HMV and its Gramophones on the outside of a Shop
HMV Illuminated Shop exterior "V" Sign
Designed to be placed above a shop front this Sign would have normally been exposed to the ravages of the elements throughout the decades and the glass would have probably shattered upon its removal.
For this reason the Sign is extremely rare.
HMV might have possibly donated an unsold sign to a Museum, but I can't think where another might be found.
I purchased this Sign in 1995
It was found in the attic of a Radio / TV Repair Shop that was closing down on the Island of Jersey.
The Sign was unused and still in its original packaging (I did not keep the packaging).
Extract from the book "Collectors Guide to 'His Master's Voice' Nipper Souvenirs" by Ruth Edge & Leonard Petts (Page 445):-
In September 1950 three new Signs were issued. These included a re-designed Box Sign (962). It measured 20 inches x 30 inches and was fitted with four 60 watt bulbs and sold to dealers for £9/12/6d (£9.62).The second addition was known as the "His Master's Voice" "V" Sign (969). This fitted directly onto the wall above the shop front, the "V" shape design ensured clear visibility in either direction. Lettering was in black and white on a red background. The 'Dog and Gramophone' Trade Mark was in full colours. The panel size was 6 foot (183cm) x 1 foot 3 inches (38cm) and was lit by six 40 watt lamps. Price was £16/16/0d (£16.80).
In good condition, I can see no damage
except for a few tiny chips in the enamel paint on the frame
For Sale at £1400
