Bebephone Nursery / Child's Gramophone
Originally part of the Ian Calderbank Collection of Gramophones.
This Gramophone has been Sold, but the details might be of interest to fellow Collectors.
The Bebephone Gramophone was manufactured in Germany - on the underside of the Gramophone is written "Germany".
The name Bebephone for a nursery model probably derives from the French word "Bebe" which translates to "Baby" in English.
The colour of the steel case possibly simulates Rosewood. It has a single spring motor. The original green felt on the 16cm (6.25") diameter Turntable is in very good original condition, the above picture show a 10" record being played. The 2" Mica Soundbox (part that holds the needle) is identified with "Bebephone Soundbox". The pear shape case dimensions are 7.5" wide, 12" deep, 9" High.
This is a quality Gramophone which can be disassembled for servicing via a few screws unlike some cheap tin-plate Gramophones that require a tin-opener instead of a screwdriver.
The Motor has ample power to play a Child's record, I have played 10" records. The Gramophone has been serviced by a specialist Gramophone Engineer. Sound quality is surprisingly good compared to other Child's gramophones; possibly explained by the fact that the Engineer also replaced the Soundbox gaskets which become hard and brittle over the years. But bear in mind this is a Toy, if quality of sound is important please buy an HMV Gramophone.
Most steel / tinplate Toy Gramophones normally have dents and ding's. The steel case on this Gramophone appears virtually unmarked. The nickel plate is also in good condition with two small marks on the turntable rim (shown in the second of the Supplementary Photographs).
This Toy Gramophone is in good physical condition; possibly never played with, or played with by a very careful child.
Please take into account this Gramophone is 80+ years old and was a basically a child's toy, hence it will have slight imperfections.
