HMV Model 102 Portable in Black
1931 / 1932
Originally part of the Ian Calderbank Collection of Gramophones.
This Gramophone has been Sold, but the details might be of interest to fellow Collectors.
Advert from the 1934 HMV Catalogue
"THE WORLD'S FINEST PORTABLE"
(HMV's description of this Gramophone - Possibly No Advertising Standards Agency in the 1930's?).
The HMV model 102 portable Gramophone represented the pinnacle of Portable Gramophone design, arguably the best Wind-up Portable Gramophone in the World.
The Gramophone for sale is the original design of the model 102 introduced in July 1931.
This early version contains a unique automatic braking system designed to work with ANY type of record, but the system was not completely reliable. In 1932 the brake was completely replaced by a far simpler system; although more reliable, it only works on the most common records that contain a "run-out" groove.
The automatic brake on my Gramophone does work very well with most records stopping correctly.
If the automatic brake fails to stop a record; as with any automatic braking system simply move the Tonearm to stop the record manually.
Nearly every Model 102 found today contains the new revised braking system. Hence this early model with the original brake system is sought after by Collectors.
On the record deck is the original Retailers plate "Attwells Binfield Company & Co. Ltd, Binfield Hall Reading".
The identification plate found under the turntable states "Model 102 Quote No. 102033642".
The part that holds the gramophone Needle is called the Soundbox. This Gramophone has the Model 16 Soundbox.
Case size 11½" Wide 16½" Deep 6½" High.
This Gramophone is complete with its "Record carrying Tray". Usually these trays that can hold up to 6 records during transportation are missing; having been put to one side and lost.
The Gramophone is in both excellent physical and mechanical condition and has been serviced by a specialist Gramophone Engineer.
Please take into account this Gramophone is 80 years old and was a domestic item for general entertainment in the home (and picnics) hence there will be minor imperfections.
