History of the HMV Model 101
The model 101 HMV portable Gramophone was available between October 1925 and circa 1931.
HMV originally introduced the Gramophone with the winding handle on the front; in late 1926 / early 1927 it was moved to the side.
The automatic start / brake contained in this Gramophone was introduced in 1929. The automatic brake activation is dependent upon the type of record played otherwise the record is stopped manually.
The 101 was introduced in 1925 with the Model 400 / 410 motor, this was replaced in late 1927 by the Model 59 enclosed motor which is found in this gramophone.
HMV started using Chrome instead of nickel plate circa 1930; The plating on this Gramophone is Chrome.
The Gramophone has been serviced by a specialist Gramophone Engineer.
Old original mainspring grease sometimes becomes hard and gluttonous over the decades. It takes expertise and therefore expense to safely handle a long mainspring with razor sharp edges. The mainspring has been removed from its drum, cleaned along its length and repacked in modern grease ready for many more decades of use.
The Rexine covering of the case has been professionally restored by a Specialist to return it to its former glory.
The Chrome plating and Rexine covered case is very good. The black enamel fittings on the case still shine after 80 years.
Please take into account this Gramophone is 80 years old and was a domestic item for general entertainment in the home (and picnics). There will be some minor imperfections, but unlike most Gramophones of this type as can be seen in the photos, it is virtually free of minor scuffs or marks in the Rexine covered case.
The Gramophone is in both excellent physical and mechanical condition otherwise it would not have been in my Collection.
