HMV Model 5 Record Storage Cabinet
in Mahogany
Circa 1930
Advert from the 1930 HMV Catalogue
Description based on the above HMV Catalogue:-
The Model 5 Record Storage Cabinet with its "Patent Lever Action" is by far the best and most practical devised.
Any particular record can be found instantly. The records are filed in a vertical position, each in a separate
compartment.
By lightly pressing the lever at the foot of each compartment, the record is ejected.
The Cabinet holds 100 10" & 12" records. The record filing compartments are numbered 1 to 100.
Dimensions 35.75" X 21" Wide X 22" Deep
The Cabinet is designed with the fact in mind that a Gramophone can be placed on top and records selected from the Cabinet below.
Rarity:-
The high initial cost of these Record Cabinets accounts for them being extremely rare.
In the HMV Catalogue of 1926 the cost of a mahogany Model 25 triple spring motor HMV Horn Gramophone was £9.
In the same catalogue the retail price of a Record Cabinet, also in mahogany with separate record compartments was more than double at a whopping £20.
Of course the Record cabinet is a top quality craftsman built piece of furniture and yes quality does cost money; but not many people could afford to part with £20.
Condition:-
All the levers work.
Please take into account this Record Storage Filing Cabinet is 80 years old;
The Mahogany case has scratches and marks that I have tried to show in the photographs. The case could benefit from some TLC.
